One of the most famous sports announcers in the nation’s history is letting Americans know how terrible be believes the NFL anthem protests really are.

Legendary baseball announcer Vin Scully won’t watch football anymore because of the national anthem protests, saying, “I will never watch another NFL game,” according to The Daily Caller.
The former LA Dodgers’ announcer spoke publicly on the issue of the national anthem protests before an audience at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California on Saturday.

“During the fall and winter, I watch the NFL on Sunday, and it’s not that I’m some great patriot. I was in the Navy for a year, didn’t go anywhere, didn’t do anything, but I have overwhelming respect and admiration for anyone who puts on a uniform and goes to war. So the only thing that I can do in my little way is to not to preach; I will never watch another NFL game,” he said, according to Fox News.

Scully, who will be turning 90 in a month, retired last year as a broadcaster for the LA Dodgers, a career that began in the 1950s when the club was still in Brooklyn. Although the former sportscaster has remained largely out of the public eye since retiring, Scully was known to be quite opinionated in his political opinions. Many fans remember the scathing critique of Socialism he made during the LA Dodgers game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

“Socialism, failing to work as it always does. This time in Venezuela. You talk about giving everybody something free and all of a sudden, there’s no food to eat. And who do you think is the richest person in Venezuela? The daughter of Hugo Chavez. Hello,” Mr. Scully said during the broadcast.

The national anthem protests began last season when San Francisco 49ers’ quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, began kneeling before the anthem in protest to what he felt was a systemic racism against African-Americans by the law enforcement community in the United States. Ever since then, the protests have increased in popularity with players, many choosing to protest despite NFL officials calling for them to stop. The protests, however, have not sat well with the American people.

“The current dispute over the national anthem is threatening to erode the unifying power of our game, and is now dividing us, and our players, from many fans across the country,” read the memo of NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, which was distributed to each team in the league.
“The controversy over the anthem is a barrier to having honest conversations and making real progress on the underlying issues. We need to move past this controversy, and we want to do that together with our players,” the document continued.

Since then, the league has suffered a dismal spectator turnout, struggling to fill stadiums all while polls continue to show that once loyal fans are refusing to watch the games due to the controversy.
According to a previously reported story, even top sponsors are withdrawing their support from the league. Papa John’s CEO said that “Leadership starts at the top, and this is an example of poor leadership,” and that “The NFL has hurt Papa John’s shareholders,” in a meeting with investors.

Vin Scully is joining the ranks of many other Americans, including the President, who are fed up with these anti-American protests in what is undoubtedly a symbolically American sport.
