Why do the Irish people get insulted when foreign people with Irish blood say they are Irish……..????

….but Daniel Day Lewis is only half Irish, half English and live in England most of his life, its only when he moved to Wicklow, Irish people began claiming him and he’s known as “Ireland’s Greatest Actor!” And Barack Obama is only, what, 1/3 Irish?! And there was a bloody song written about it!!!!

What does being foreign with “Irish blood” actually mean?

To call yourself “Irish” when you were not born in Ireland is incorrect. If you are born in America you are American by birth, if you are born in England you are English, if you are born in Ireland you are Irish. Its quite simple.

If people genuinely have direct relatives (parents/grandparents) born in Ireland that is all well and good and they can at least say they are of “Irish descent” but many people, Americans in particular, claim to be “a quarter Irish” when in fact none of their grandparents or great grandparents for that matter have ever breathed Irish air in their life.
