Clowns have always painted themselves white, partially to hide their identities, as many of them were fugitives, and many others were ashamed of (a) their past, (b) their status as a clown compared to their other aspirations in life, or (c) their real life reputation, be it deserved or undeserved.

Minstrel shows have been around for hundreds of years, and it was only the 1900s-1950s liberals who made such an effort to lampoon blacks with them.

The claims of conservative racism, especially those referring to the minstrel shows and comparing them to conservatives and the Joker sign, are all specious and are generally emanating from people who make lots of specious claims on a regular basis.
