Why Do Canadians love Barack Obama?

I don’t understand the love-in between Canadian Liberals/New Democrats and Barack Obama and the U.S. Democratic Party. The same people who say that Stephen Harper and his Conservatives are extremely right-wing are the same people who swoon over Obama, the Clinton’s, and the Dems when, in reality, the Dems are much further right-wing than our Conservatives. Case in point: Obama, the Clintons, and the mainstream (i.e. presidential- and governor-level, and most congressional-level) support: the death penalty, the COMBAT in Afghanistan (so does Ralph Nader for crying out loud!), oppose Canadian-style single payer health care, oppose relations with Cuba, Clinton supported the war in Iraq, oppose gay marriage, etc. Can you imagine what the Liberals/NDP would say if Harper adopted any of these “Obama” policies. They’d call him “right-wing” and “neoconservative” before you know it! Yet, they swoon over Obama, the Clinton’s, and the Dems. I don’t get it. Any thoughts?

First off I would like to state that I am a huge follower of politics, in Canada, the US and around the world. So I am not just an idiot making blind comments like other “new found” lovers of politics (specifically American politics) in the US and Canada.

I have to agree with you. I like Obama, I think of him as an American version of Trudeau (a hero of mine).
Do I think of him good for America? Yes.
Would I want any of his policies implemented in my country? No.
Is he a socialist when you view the international political spectrum? No.

Americans view anyone at the centre of THEIR political spectrum as liberal or a socialist. The truth is that Obama is barely, just barely to the left of Stephen Harper, even if Harper had a majority and had the freedom to implement his (Canadian) far right policies. The only real difference I see between Obama and Harper is the charisma, besides the obvious race, religion, and body type. And hair for that matter.

In my opinion Dennis Kucinich is about equal to Stéphane Dion, Kucinich was my first choice but that didn’t work out too well……

I took a quiz once that stated what US party I would best fit and I got socialist party, yet I am going to join the Liberal Party of Canada in about 2 years.
