American Jews think about the future of Israel and Palestine and President Barack Obama to hold office

What American Jews believe in Israel's negotiations with the Palestinians? In the survey in late September of 800 self-identified Jewish voters through United States, led by John McLaughlin & Associates has been interesting results with important implications.

By a margin nearly 3-1 (60-22 percent, with an accuracy of ± 3.5% at a confidence interval 95%), American Jews say that Israel should not sign a treaty with the Palestinians if it requires an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. If given the choice – if the Arab world accepts Israel's right really to exist, or if it is the destruction of Israel – the people interviewed by a 3-even-1 margin (60-19%) believe that the Arabs still want to eliminate Israel. After a quarter century of land in Israel to the Arabs, is a very important number, resulting reluctance to accept the permanence of deep Arab Israeli.

By an overwhelming majority of six to one margin (76-13%), American Jews that Obama's promise of 900 million dollars in aid to the Palestinian Authority in five years is granted that if the Palestinian Authority removes all anti-Israeli statements books and anti-Semitic school. An even larger 8-to-1 margin (78-10%) want to withhold money until Yasser Arafat Oslo meet its obligations to prohibit and to disarm terrorist groups and terrorists extradited to Israel.

Contrary to these critical positions, moving the U.S. Embassy Jerusalem has less support. Asked whether they agree with the legislation of Congress for moving the embassy (in recognition of the assertion of Israel that Jerusalem is the capital) or the opposition of President Barack Obama to the law (on the basis that the state of the city must be negotiated between Israel and the Palestinians) respondents with a margin of nearly 2-1 (57-30%) are in agreement with the Congress. The sample is also widely favor of the Office of Prime Minister Ehud Barak: asked if you are in the right direction or is late, it passed by a margin of 8-to-one (63-8%).

Finally, the survey finds that American Jews are not focused on Israel. In a question about issues that concern them most, the overwhelming majority 87% said the internal affairs and only 5% to the foreign policy. This helps explain the high level of interest not Israel and the Middle East, said they read 34% "great" on such matters and 58% say "do a little" about them.

This profusion of opinions has four important consequences. Firstly, the survey confirms American Jewish Committee since 1993 that points to a tightening attitude on the issue of Palestinians. As Yale Zussman concluded in its study of the Middle East six years quarterly AJC survey, "American Jews are increasingly wary of a negotiation process that cares can be a trap for Israel. "On the other hand, it is an apparent contradiction between the overwhelming support of Barak himself and for the positions he does not approve (eg, withholding money to the Palestinian Authority). This suggests that while American Jews have a great respect for the Prime Minister of Israel, who are generally unaware of the action taking quite the contrary, their own point of view – a conclusion supported by the fact that only one third of them say they are well informed about Israel.

Third Instead, these results raise questions about a survey commissioned Israel Policy Forum in July 1999 revealed American Jews support] the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians "by a margin of 1.11 (88-8%). Well, yes, support in principle the idea Israel to find a way to stop hostilities against Palestinians, but our study shows that strong ideas also on how to – And these ideas are much more skeptical than those promoted by the current leaders of Israel.

Fourth, American Jews seem to be less attached to Israel. Yes, a minority remains determined to follow the news closely, traveling to Israel, lobbying Congress, and give money, but a growing number of American Jews have other things in mind.

For Israel, it is very important, given the vital role of American Jews have had on the formulation of U.S. policy in the Middle East. This decrease in interest is particularly important at a time – as evidenced by the recent Burger King, Sprint, and episodes of Disney – Arab and Muslim in the U.S. find their voice.
