Singing Sensation, Mariah Carey, Reclaiming Her Place On the Charts

Best known for her wide vocal range, Mariah Carey has become a hot topic once again, though it took the pop singer several years to bounce back from her unsuccessful albums and less than favorable movie reviews. Aside from that, her reported “breakdown” didn’t offer much help in the way of associating her name with success. However, Mariah Carey trivia buffs and all of her fans will be pleased to know that her legacy in music has not yet come to an end.

Any Mariah Carey quiz will likely include questions about how this stage fearing star was discovered. Oddly enough, Carey was actually a working songbird during her high school years; missing several days of school due to the demands of the job. However, it wasn’t until 1988 that she was offered a recording contract by Tommy Mattola, an executive at Columbia Records. Mattola had been given a demo on behalf of Carey by Brenda Starr, an artist that she had been singing backup for. This chance occurrence is what ultimately launched Carey into stardom.

By 1990, Carey had recorded and released her first album. It gained notoriety quickly and this is where most Mariah Carey trivia begins. The album was titled Mariah Carey and, later that year, Carey was awarded two Grammys. She also married Mattola 1993, but the relationship was short lived. The couple divorced in 1998, with various media reports stating that Carey felt that Mattola was too controlling. However, she continued to fulfill her contract with Columbia and had released seven albums under the Columbia name. Though her final album released by Columbia, Rainbow, didn’t garner quite as much publicity as Carey had hoped, and it became one of her lowest selling albums under this label.

In 2001, the songbird signed with Virgin Records. Soon after, she experienced an emotional breakdown that was the talk of the media. She then signed with Island Records in 2002. Her comeback began with the 2005 Best Selling Album, The Emancipation of Mimi, which spawned the successful tour “The Adventures of Mimi”. This album proved that Carey still had the drive to make it back to the top.

In 2008, Carey married Nick Cannon. In 2009, she graced the stage to sing “Hero” for the swearing in of President Barack Obama. She also performed at the Michael Jackson memorial with Trey Lorenz. To this date, Carey holds the record for being the very first female singer to have ever held the top two positions on the Hot 100 simultaneously.
