Help me on nuclear waste!?
My science class is doing a debate team and I need some help.My team is on putting nuclear waste in Nevada.
*Find really good facts(Include important people if found.*
*Please inculde good pictures, medias,or graphs if found.*
I need help because I found negatives that the team against mine will use.Examples:
-John McCain says,”Nevada is not a waste land”
*He believes they have value and Yucca Mountain should be looked at not trashed on.
-The U.S. Senate passed (a lot of money) energy spending bill that backs up President Barack Obama’s promise to close the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste facility in Nevada.
*I say why close it!?They’ve already been working and he wants to shut them down all the had work they’ve already done?
!-PLEASE HELP-!
The debate begins next week.
The argument for storage of nuclear waste in Yucca Mountain should be a fun one to put together. I don’t know how much public support you will find on it. I am sure that if you just google ‘support for Yucca Mountain’ you will find some decent information. For your argument, I think you should start with facts about nuclear waste. Things like how much waste is being generated, what is currently being done with it (stored on site), etc. Talk about the benefits of nuclear energy. Disregarding Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, how many accidents have there been? How many deaths have there been? I think you will find that nuclear energy is actually incredibly safe. Today’s reactors have so many redundancies and fail-safes that an accident is virtually impossible.
I don’t know how well you could use this for your argument, but you could consider some alternatives for nuclear waste storage. One idea is re-enrichment. In a spent fuel rod, only about 3% of the energy has been used up. But the rod is useless because there is too much crap built up, preventing the proliferation of fission. So the rod gets put in a barrel and stored until thousands of years go by and it is deemed safe. What if the rod is reprocessed, so that the remaining energy can be used?
Nuclear energy is great. Unless we want to go back to the stone age, we need electricity. What is the greater evil? Packing away a barrel of nuclear waste in a mountain where it will harm nothing and no one, or burning thousands of tons of coal, releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and contributing to global warming (if you believe in global warming).
