Osama Bin Laden

First it was Barack OBAMA and now it is OSAMA! Yep, the one an only is back ranting and raving, but this time he’s after the Papa- the Pope! The Al Qaeda leader himself, Osama bin Laden, threatened the European Union with grave punishment over the re-publication of cartoons of Islam’s Prophet Mohammad that Muslims saw as offensive. He seems to think that the world has to do what he says!

Bin Laden in an audio recording posted on the Internet said that the drawings which were published by Danish and other newspapers were part of a “crusade” in which the Catholic Pope was involved. And here I thought the Crusades were over! When will we ever get over killling one another because of religious differences?

We’re much more sophisticated here in America now. We only speak evil of those that have a different theology than ours. We only question people’s salvation and disparage them to others. Here in America we’re more civilized than we used to be. There was a day when we would fight people whether they were pre or post tribulation. No mas! That issue is old hat and besides the numerous times that the world was to end just simply haven’t come about.

But, it is the 5th anniversary of the Iraq war and while President Bush was strongly signaling Wednesday that he won’t order troop withdrawals beyond those already planned because he refuses to ”jeopardize the hard-fought gains” of the past year, Osama needed to do or say something that reminded the world that he was still a force to be reckoned with- in some fashion.

Maybe we can use this to reunite us after weeks of Eliot Spitzer and Jeremiah Wright obsessions.

Maybe it will take our minds off of the disastrous stock market.

Maybe we should even pray for Pope Benedict XVI: remember the St. Malachy prophecy?

I have no doubt that bin Laden wants to do something spectacular before Bush leaves office just to embarrass him and I am also sure that the terrorists will attempt something right after we swear in a new president (regardless of who that is), just to try and catch us off guard- or to test our stamina. Remember, Bush had been in office just a little over eight months when the Twin Towers were taken down.

Maybe we should pray for the whole world!
