I think he is taking a big gamble here, and in my opinion he is doing it because he clearly believes the Conservatives might just win the general election.
In my personal opinion, his tactics might just pay off not because he is relying on the support of his party members, but because he has the support from the majority of electorate, in which case his party would have no option but to go with it.
Plans to reopen the Lisbon Treaty debate and stage a referendum on it in Britain if he wins power, is what people have been calling for an aweful long time anyway. The true test is whether he is TRUE to his word. We’ll have to wait and see since it may be nothing more than a ploy to gain votes for the Conservatives.
As regards immigration, I doubt it will make a huge impact in reducing the immigration. In fact I fear it may be quite the opposite.
