Where should I apply to college?
I’m a senior in Illinois and its about that time.
I want to get a degree in business… either finance, management, international… or economics. I have a 35 ACT, a 3.93 GPA, Im a national merit semifinalist (soon to be finalist), part of the National Honors Society, I have a part time job as a concierge at an assisted living home(I volunteered there for 2 years before they offered me the job), before i got the job I ran track and cross country for 3 years, Im in clubs such as Model United Nations, Business Professionals of America, and I’m very interested in politics.
So thats pretty much my HS background, I’ve already applied to Indiana University but people think I’m selling myself short, even though they have a great business college and I’ll get a scholarship and entry into the honors college… where else should I apply? Im concerned I dont have enough ‘leadership’ experience, which is what a lot of schools seem to care about the most.
Colleges at the undergraduate level aren’t as concerned about lack of leadership so much. At the MBA level, yes. I wouldn’t consider IU selling yourself short. It’s a great school. However I always advocate going for the best you can imagine, which can be scary. Especially if it means being far from home. You’ve worked very hard to to achieve what you have, now it’s time to realize your potential. Quality universities work hard to ensure their entering freshman classes are diverse in terms of student backgrounds which includes geographic origin. Look outside the scope of comfort zone at some schools that are top tier and further away.
I’d recommend Duke, Boston College, NYU, University of Virginia, University of North Carolina, Vanderbilt, Emory…you have so many choices. Explore them. You’ll also receive a widely varying level of financial aid. See what comes back from the schools you apply to. I think you’ll be tremendously surprised. Good luck!
