Music Industry Politics

How did rock & roll impact American art, politics, music industry, and culture?

What kind of impact? How did American life change?

You DO know that entire BOOKS have been written on this very subject, don’t you? At the very LEAST, this question would require an entire ESSAY to answer sufficiently!

Pop culture has had an ENORMOUS impact not just in America, but for most, if not ALL, the entire world. Evidence of this is EVERYWHERE. Look at how styles change – clothes, hair, even make-up. Teenage boys in the ’50s adopted that “pompador” look, complete with black leather jackets to emulate Elvis – or James Dean – or Marlon Brando. Girls in the early 60s often wore those big bee-hive hair-dos, and tight little dresses, a la The Ronettes! In the mid-60s, the British Invasion again changed style completely. The “mod” look was all the rage: hip-hugger bell-bottom pants, mini skirts, fish-net stockings, “poor boy” tops! Flower print shirts were mixed with striped pants for the guys. As we progressed into the LATER 60s, San Francisco took the lead in fashion with the “flower power” movement. Long flowing dresses for the girls; faded blue jeans for the guys, long straight hair parted down the middle for all – and, “love beads”! By the mid-70s, the look TOTALLY changed once again. The Disco movement brought a new “conservatism” to the overall image. Men cut their long hair into carefully styled looks, and wore those 3-piece polyester suits like John Travolta in “Saturday Night Fever”. The girls wore shorter dresses to show off their legs out on the dance floor, put away their “earth shoes”, and wore high heels once again. As Disco gradually faded from the scene, “punk” inspired a whole NEW look altogether. Straight legs replaced the old bell-bottoms, and we all wore a lot of (horizontally) striped shirts, and pointy-toed black shoes. Short, choppy punk hair-cuts became mainstream, as well! In the later 80s, we had our heavy-metal “hair bands”, and young people of BOTH sexes had to have that long, wild, “BIG” hair look!

The list goes on & on. American life has changed DRASTICALLY, along with the music. I don’t even want to get STARTED on the subversive changes in society the rap/hip-hop culture has brought about!

Since the dawning of the Rock n’ Roll Era, our icons have influenced and perpetuated every facet of our existence. Today, the styles and trends are more diverse than ever, as people emulate what appeals to them, personally, and discards the rest!
