An economic commentator tells Press TV the credit card giant American Express' new plan to lay off about 5400 of its employees worldwide will hurt the United States economy as well as the world economy. American Express, the United States' multinational financial services corporation, has announced plans to lay off about 5400 of its employees worldwide by year's end. The credit card giant said on Thursday that it would cut its staff by 8.5 percent as it took almost $600 million in after-tax charges in the last quarter of 2012, the Associated Press reported. The company also said its net income in the quarter will drop 46 percent compared with the same period a year earlier. On Wednesday, the US investment bank Morgan Stanley announced plans to cut 1600 jobs, with about half of the cuts targeting employees in the United States and the other half occurring overseas. Last month, banking giant Citigroup said it would eliminate 11000 jobs worldwide this year to reduce expenses by $900 million.
