The academic dress of Durham University is quite similar to that of Oxford. Most Durham colleges insist on undergraduate gowns used on formal occasions – primarily for registration and official rooms (dinner) – Van Mildert exceptions, the Corporation of St. Cuthbert, Collingwood, Stephenson, St Aidans, and the College of St. Hild and St. Bede (registration only). The robe and the bells are used for graduations, but mortarboards, while officially part of the dress of the university community University, are not. When in full dress, doctors use soft square hats (known as the name of John Knox CAPS) instead of caps or hats Tudor. In formal rooms, only wearing dresses and physicians usually use their clothes to undress. University members may also wear gowns when they go to services in the cathedral, but is left to individual choice out of certain services (for example, the founders and benefactors of service). Dresses are also used in meetings the University Senate by members of this body.
Note that some schools do not wear dresses degree, it is likely to undergo a degree in Durham, graduated in absentia, and never have to wear a dress. Moreover, college formals with frequent (twice a week at the castle, Chad and Hatfield) and attend vespers at the cathedral regularly, you may spend a good part of his life in a dress.
Clothes
What are four main gowns in the Durham scheme, corresponding to four levels within the University: BA, bachelor, masters and doctors. In addition, variants of Oxford Lay (or Gimp) dress, are used for dressing and undressing MUS D. Mus. With the exception of physicians dress gala, all the dresses are black Durham.
Undergraduate
This dress is basically the same beat the Oxford scholar – a dress gathered at the knees to the yoke with flared sleeves at the elbow – but with the union of open forearm about four inches from the bottom. They are used in most colleges (but not all) on the official premises (dinner) and at the end of the school. Some universities also insist on their inclusion in the meetings of the Junior Common Room. Regulation in the port undergraduate gowns are technically established by the schools, but in many regulations schools are determined by the JCR.
The dress of researchers from Durham (rarely seen outside college chapels) is longer and has a stitched seam forearm, for example, identical to the scholars of Oxford. The Hild Bede College and clothing, preserved since before the college became a constituent college of University, brocade dresses differs from other Durham, woven and be shorter. St. Chad's gown (rarely seen outside the registry) is based on the student's dress Oxford, but with two black buttons at the bottom of the forearm, joined the stitching (Open) 5-inch green cord twisted.
Graduate
Students Durham Graduate, unlike Oxford or Cambridge, wear the dress of her first degree at times, when used dresses.
Singles
Essentially a version large undergraduate gown. It is long, halfway between the coming mid-calf and ankle, with sleeves that hang almost as far. The main difference between this and the dress Oxford BA is that the forearm seam opened about 15-20 cm above the wrist, which is held closed with a button and loop. The arm is usually transmitted through and created the opening for the arm is exposed from the elbow instead of being treated at the wrist, as is the case with the dress of Oxford.
The simple dress is used by all singles, except for comics, which use the master's gown. It is also used for the past masters of the first cycle of four years, as Meng and MSCI.
Teachers
The dress of teachers is identical to the Oxford MA gown, by adding a black cord and button on the handle (which in fact identical Oxford dress BD). It is similar to the dress of the unmarried, except that the sleeves are long rectangular and closed at the ends, with a crescent cut end of each round, and a horizontal arm slot just above the elbow.
The dress is used for master teachers of postgraduate courses, with the exception of M. Mus which has its own dress and undress as dress for physicians. The doctors of theology wear the dress with a black silk scarf – making it the identical dress to undress SD Oxford, while the young doctors (physicians and JED) are distinguished by a string Palatinate and the button on the handle.
Postgraduate certificates: same dress as BA, ie dress alone.
