Questions about the Political Parties?

Why are there only two main parties(democratic and republican)?
When were the political parties formed (democratic and republican)?
What advantages might there be to having different parties control the executive and legislative branches?
If a president’s party controls Congress, does the president have a greater chance of being elected?

That’s it for now maybe I’ll come up with more later! :)

Ideally, there should be several parties, all acting to keep the others in check. Unfortunately, we only have two. The result of this is that the parties become unchallenged (in certain constituencies) which leads to corruption.

There is little real advantage in having different branches controlled by different parties. As long as it doesn’t block the creation of laws, then there is no real reason to avoid said circumstances. In such a case, the president’s chances of getting elected really shouldn’t change that much. However, it could be speculated that the composition of Congress is indicative of popular sentiment, which would in turn affect the election results.

Something to think about…
