I’m trying to find out what the Hans and Patrick names stand for on the flag in this political cartoon.?
I’m pretty sure that the 1870 has to do with the Naturalization Act, which made it so that the chinese couldn’t become citizens, and the know-nothings is the political party during the 1850′s that was against immigration, but I have no clue what the two names mean and I have searched everywhere.
Here is the website where the picture is: http://digitalgallery.nypl.org/nypldigital/dgdisplaylargemeta.cfm?strucID=720192&imageID=833651&word=Immigrants%20%2D%2D%20Chinese%20%2D%2D%20United%20States&s=3¬word=&d=&c=&f=2&lWord=&lField=&sScope=&sLevel=&sLabel=&num=0&imgs=12&total=4&pos=2
Thanks to anyone who helps me in advance. I really appreciate it!
Hans is the stereotype for German immigrants and Patrick is the stereotype for Irish immigrants. Both groups came over in large numbers in the 1850′s. Central Europe was in revolution and Ireland was in the mist of the potato famine. Both groups found work on the railroads and were now competting with the Chinese for work. The ladder represents how these two groups now oppose immigration when they themselves had been immigrants not long before.
