Politics Teacher Jobs

Should I file a complaint against my teacher?

He is my AP Calculus teacher. He’s a cool guy, and tells us stories all of the time, but that’s part of the problem. He spends at least half of the period each day telling us a random story which has nothing to do with calculus, and when he gets around to teaching us he does a terrible job. Most of the time he doesn’t even teach anything, just tells us to get into groups and figure it out. On top of not being an effective teacher, he often preaches his views about religion and politics to the class. No one has reported him yet because he’s a cool teacher and most people agree with his Christian conservative views. I want to report him, but I’m afraid people will know I reported him because I’m open about being Atheist and liberal, and therefore ridicule and shun me. What should I do?

As you know by now, different teachers have varying styles. The group work may not be effective for you, but may be great for someone else. As for preaching his religious and political views, that’s crossing the line. Teachers are there to teach you their particular subject, not to preach. Can you speak to your school counselor about this? Perhaps you are not the only student who has issues with this teacher.. your counselor could help. Also, what do your parents say? Perhaps they could talk to the teacher during parent-teacher conferences and express concerns about religious pressure coming from him or other students.

If you really feel pressured, you can contact your local branch of the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) for help. It shouldn’t matter that you are an atheist or a liberal, it is not your AP Calculus teacher’s job to change your religious or political views.
