Obama Offers College Grants to Help Moms and Women

Are you a mom who has been thinking about going back to school? Sometimes the funding can be hard to come by, but sometimes grants become available that help these women out. President Barack Obama even has government grants for these women to push them to further their education, but there are other scholarship monies available as well.

There are five types of grants that women and mothers can receive for education, and they include need, merit, institutional, sociology and general. Need scholarships are when the applicant is struggling financially and the money will assist with living expenses and tuition fees. They generally have to show proof of income to show they are in the bad financial state. Merit scholarships are given when a person excels in a certain area and earns the money based on that skill. Institutional awards is when a particular college or university awards an applicant who will attend that school. Sociology grants are given based on their race, gender, religion or ethnicity. Finally, general scholarships to children or employees of a company.

You might have heard of the Pell grant. These are government grants ? now more than $5,000 ? that are based on need. But as stated before there are many different grants, so if you do not qualify for Pell there are other places to look for educational funding.

Moms who want to further their education would fall under the sociology category. They can be single moms, working moms or stay-at-home moms. Dads can apply as well. As long as the applicants are American citizens over the age of 18, they qualify. They also can look into $10,000 scholarships that are currently available.
