Christians, tell me what you think of these quotes by Jerry Falwell?
Jerry Falwell has massive support in Virginia, where he founded Liberty University and has plans for a law school to teach Evangelicals to overturn laws that go against doctrine.
If you’re not a born-again Christian, you’re a failure as a human being.
– Rev Jerry Falwell
I sincerely believe that the collective efforts of many secularists during the past generation, resulting in the expulsion from our schools and from the public square, has left us vulnerable.
– Jerry Falwell)
AIDS is not just God’s punishment for homosexuals; it is God’s punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals.
– Jerry Falwell
The idea that religion and politics don’t mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country.
– Rev Jerry Falwell, Sermon, July 4, 1976
What do you think of these quotes? Do they reflect the views of evangelicals? Why do so many people support him?
Speaking as a Christian, Jerry Falwell – to me – is an embarassment; a man that is just too full of himself and who has access to mass media resources.
He has some very bizarre ideas and I think that in many ways he has lost contact with reality; secular OR spiritual.
Don’t be confused by “how many people ‘support’ him.” It’s not that difficult for ANY charismatic figure – especially one with media access – to attract “followers.”
I’m pretty sure David Koresh, Jim Jones and Marshall Applewhite all attracted followers without the benefit of television.
I’m not saying that Falwell isn’t a “Christian;” just not the kind I – or a lot of people – would associate with or follow.
