Why people think that a Conservative government would be the same as in the 1980s?

I have studied this period in politics and I understand that this was not very nice for Britain, but now we have a government that has been as bad as Margaret Thatcher's Conservatives. I mean "not to vote Conservative before 1979, however, the conservatives had been right in the center and its leaders were far less radical as Thatcher. I also believe that David Cameron is much better than Thatcher and a Conservative government would not be as severe as that in the 80s. So people complain about the cost reduction.
