Current status and prospects for the political reunification of Cyprus
In the current state of the Greek part of the island is a member of the Organization United Nations and the European Union while the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is officially recognized worldwide since its inception in 1974, when Turkey invaded Cyprus to stop a Greek military coup was in danger the lives of many Turkish Cypriot.
After the political events in Cyprus at the announcement of Northern Cyprus President Mehmet Ali Talat and his Greek counterpart, Demetris Christofias, speaking in full Peace begins with a complete September 03 this year. The presidents met on Friday, July 25 to agree a date to begin peace talks. At its third meeting with the participation of the UN since Christofias took over the South, it was agreed that once the plans for reunification Referendums are achieved will be carried out simultaneously on both sides of the island to Turkish Cypriots and Greeks to vote separately.
A joint statement said: "The purpose of the fully fledged negotiations is to find a mutually acceptable solution to the problem Cyprus, which will safeguard the basic rights and legitimate purposes and interests of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. "
In addition, leaders revealed a series of "promoting confidence-building measures, aimed at facilitating the peace process and gave instructions for immediate implementation in full. These include:
– Cooperation to prevent illegal dumping and rehabilitation of areas in the buffer zone of the United Nations (a stretch of 300 kilometers of desert along of the border through the main city of Nicosia and other cities as Famagusta).
– Exchange of experiences and information among environmental scientists.
– Working together to prevent forest fires.
– Waste management, treatment and recycling.
– Measures to raise awareness to save water.
– An approach mines and quarries common.
– Agreement on biodiversity and nature protection.
– The Navy and the marine pollution management and control.
pollution by asbestos – management and control.
– Management of historical contamination and control.
– Compilation of a loss of heritage properties Cyprus cultural.
– The decision on two pilot projects for restoration.
– Guidelines for computer software and interactive education.
– Cooperation in a crisis situation.
– The exchange of information and intelligence on crime and problems.
However, despite this meeting, yet there is a conflict between the two leaders on the outcome of the reunification process. It is said that on the north side, the TRNC, in favor of a Virgin Birth, "" create a New Cyprus, the Greek Cypriot community would prefer a takeover of the former Republic of Cyprus full participation of Turkish Cypriots.
Before the meeting Friday, Greek Cypriot President Christofias presented their hopes on the island include a rotating presidency sovereignty, citizenship, economics, and a "personality internationally, "while the two equal political communities. But it added that the President of the Greek Cypriot community in the position for a longer period, while the vice president would come from the other community, a little inconsistent with his earlier statement.
Despite President Talat closed again, the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, made a public demonstration of faith in the president of the TRNC. He believed that a solution reached the end this year and "Turkey will continue to support the approach of dialogue Talat.
A second recent development is the struggle for maras / Verosha area of Famagusta. A report by the European Parliament called on the Turkish military to leave the area and allow the return Greek Refugees was launched last week. In 1974, 37,000 Greeks fled the city, which was then one of the most prosperous island. Since the invasion, the region as designated by the Turkish and Greek Verosha Maras remained intact and has become a ghost town, off and guarded by the Turkish military checkpoints and signs.
The Greek Cypriot community to see the Turkish army as "invaders" and TRNC itself as an occupation of northern Cyprus by Turkey. A petition signed by the Committee on Petitions of the European Parliament endorsed the report 26 000 Greek signatures.
The report notes that, as a candidate country, Turkey is obliged to respect the fundamental EU principles, respect for freedoms civil and property rights. The Famagusta Refugee Council (FRC) believes that Greek ownership would allow communities to coexist peacefully and cooperate in the development of ties economic independence. The area was very attractive to tourists and could offer key opportunities for developers, so open.
In short, despite conflicts in their hopes for future leaders, in fact, neither Greek nor Turkish Cypriot communities I have no animosity towards each other. Crossing the border is a smooth process for both communities, as well as EU citizens, where we just show your passport and was released. The only restrictions are for Non-citizens EU are trying to move from north to south of the border.

Restoration Literature: An Anthology $14.78 This anthology brings together a stimulating and entertaining collection of works from the confident and creative period of 1660-1700. The literature of this time is by turns refined, poignant, and brash. Alongside major works such as Dryden’s Absalom and Achitophel and Mac Flecknoe, printed in their entirety, is a substantial group of lyrics by Rochester, while Milton’s Paradise Lost provides a running commentary on the Restoration scene. Scurrilous satires and pamphlets, diaries, theatrical prologues, translations and striking work by women poets and autobiographers illustrate the period in politics, religion, philosophy and in attitudes to town and country, love and friendship. |
