It is a striking paradox of nineteenth-century England that as it became the first industrial nation, it became increasingly fascinated by its preindustrial past and, in particular, its medieval inheritance. The preservation of that inheritance was a major cultural achievement of Victorian England, one that resonates in contemporary historic preservationist movements still so common throughout Eng...
Current status and prospects for the political reunification of Cyprus
In the current state of the Greek part of the island is a member of the Organization United Nations and the European Union while the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is officially recognized worldwide since its inception in 1974, when Turkey invaded Cyprus to stop a Greek military coup was in danger the lives of many Turkish Cypriot.
After the political events in Cyprus at the announcement of Northern Cyprus President Mehmet Ali Talat and his Greek counterpart, Demetris Christofias, speaking in full Peace begins with a complete September 03 this year. The presidents met on Friday, July 25 to agree a date to begin peace talks. At its third meeting with the participation of the UN since Christofias took over the South, it was agreed that once the plans for reunification Referendums are achieved will be carried out simultaneously on both sides of the island to Turkish Cypriots and Greeks to vote separately.
A joint statement said: "The purpose of the fully fledged negotiations is to find a mutually acceptable solution to the problem Cyprus, which will safeguard the basic rights and legitimate purposes and interests of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. "
In addition, leaders revealed a series of "promoting confidence-building measures, aimed at facilitating the peace process and gave instructions for immediate implementation in full. These include:
– Cooperation to prevent illegal dumping and rehabilitation of areas in the buffer zone of the United Nations (a stretch of 300 kilometers of desert along of the border through the main city of Nicosia and other cities as Famagusta). – Exchange of experiences and information among environmental scientists. – Working together to prevent forest fires. – Waste management, treatment and recycling. – Measures to raise awareness to save water. – An approach mines and quarries common. – Agreement on biodiversity and nature protection. – The Navy and the marine pollution management and control. pollution by asbestos – management and control. – Management of historical contamination and control. – Compilation of a loss of heritage properties Cyprus cultural. – The decision on two pilot projects for restoration. – Guidelines for computer software and interactive education. – Cooperation in a crisis situation. – The exchange of information and intelligence on crime and problems.
However, despite this meeting, yet there is a conflict between the two leaders on the outcome of the reunification process. It is said that on the north side, the TRNC, in favor of a Virgin Birth, "" create a New Cyprus, the Greek Cypriot community would prefer a takeover of the former Republic of Cyprus full participation of Turkish Cypriots.
Before the meeting Friday, Greek Cypriot President Christofias presented their hopes on the island include a rotating presidency sovereignty, citizenship, economics, and a "personality internationally, "while the two equal political communities. But it added that the President of the Greek Cypriot community in the position for a longer period, while the vice president would come from the other community, a little inconsistent with his earlier statement.
Despite President Talat closed again, the Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, made a public demonstration of faith in the president of the TRNC. He believed that a solution reached the end this year and "Turkey will continue to support the approach of dialogue Talat.
A second recent development is the struggle for maras / Verosha area of Famagusta. A report by the European Parliament called on the Turkish military to leave the area and allow the return Greek Refugees was launched last week. In 1974, 37,000 Greeks fled the city, which was then one of the most prosperous island. Since the invasion, the region as designated by the Turkish and Greek Verosha Maras remained intact and has become a ghost town, off and guarded by the Turkish military checkpoints and signs.
The Greek Cypriot community to see the Turkish army as "invaders" and TRNC itself as an occupation of northern Cyprus by Turkey. A petition signed by the Committee on Petitions of the European Parliament endorsed the report 26 000 Greek signatures.
The report notes that, as a candidate country, Turkey is obliged to respect the fundamental EU principles, respect for freedoms civil and property rights. The Famagusta Refugee Council (FRC) believes that Greek ownership would allow communities to coexist peacefully and cooperate in the development of ties economic independence. The area was very attractive to tourists and could offer key opportunities for developers, so open.
In short, despite conflicts in their hopes for future leaders, in fact, neither Greek nor Turkish Cypriot communities I have no animosity towards each other. Crossing the border is a smooth process for both communities, as well as EU citizens, where we just show your passport and was released. The only restrictions are for Non-citizens EU are trying to move from north to south of the border.
Japanese History of Edo period to Meiji Restoration(1/6)
This book is a comprehensive account of the Church of England, Anglicanism and religious life in England during the Restoration period that shaped all three. While much has been written about the Church of England in the century before the Civil War, this history focuses on Anglicanism in the second half of the 17th century, a period when it began to establish a distinct indentity, to recognize an…

In this pathbreaking work, now available in paperback, Charles Tilly challenges all previous formulations of state development in Europe. Specifically, Tilly charges that most available explanations fail because they do not account for the great variety of kinds of states which were viable at different stages of European history, and because they assume a unilinear path of state development resolv…
Period drama equivalent to Western/Samurai film in UK?
Westerns and Samurai films have their own distinctive style of lengthly showdowns and dramatic shots, but is there an equivalent genre like it in the muddy environment of Britain? Like, medieval period dramas? Or ‘Eastern’ films set in Victorian England? What’s the setting in general? (probably medieval times, unless I’m wrong)
Exclude (current) boring TV period dramas mostly about romance and politics in general. I’m talking Kurasawa/Sergio Leone-like stuff here. You could say Shakespeare stuff if you’d like, but can you compare them to the way films like ‘Fistful of Dollars’ are shown? That’s what I’m looking for.
Do your best if you’re willing to help and thanks.
I’m aware Kurasawa’s films were the basis for a few spaghetti westerns. I’m just wondering if there’s any film with the same kind of cinematography and action scenes that’s used in a historic English setting.
Many Western films, especially Sergio Leone films were originally Kurosawa films, shot in the same style, with the same characters, dialogue, very similar sets, etc. The original Kurosawa film that “Fistful of Dollars” is based on is called “Yojimbo” which translates as bodyguard. Watch this film and you will immediately see the comparison.
Clint Eastwood and Sergio Leone were totally inspired by the Kurosawa movies and simply translated the format to a Western setting. Watch “The Seven Samurai” , the inspiration for “The Magnificent Seven”.
So unless any British directors and filmmakers were similarly inspired, I doubt you’ll find an equivalent. However there were quite a few British movies with similar themes to what you are looking for, that were made in the 60′s and 70′s by company’s like Hammer Films. Seek out the “Fu-Manchu” movies for a starting point.
PS: No films which exactly fulfil your criteria, that I know of, but it sounds like an interesting concept, especially in a Victorian adventure type setting as you suggest. Sorry that I can’t be more help.

In the 1880s, fashionable Londoners left their elegant homes and clubs in Mayfair and Belgravia and crowded into omnibuses bound for midnight tours of the slums of East London. A new word burst into popular usage to describe these descents into the precincts of poverty to see how the poor lived: slumming. In this captivating book, Seth Koven paints a vivid portrait of the practitioners of slumming…
