"Biggie" Munn 1947-1953 – two national championships and winning percentage remains the best

Clarence "Biggie" Munn was an All-American in Minnesota before returning to Charlie Bachman. Despite getting waxed 55-0 by Michigan in its infancy, was quickly identified a 7-2 in the first of his seven seasons. In 1950, Munn was the Spartan program in the Top 10 nationally with a 8-1 campaign that included victories over No. 3 ranking of Michigan and Notre Dame.

He was back-to-back 9-0 seasons in 1951 and 1952 to go 18-0 and win two national championships and national team honors in 1952 years, against three nationally ranked opponents, Penn State, Purdue and Notre Dame.

In 1953, he went 9-1, beating UCLA 28-20 in the Rose Bowl and push its record of three years of the regular season 27-1 and 35-2 his mark of 4 years (won 94% loss of registration).

Hugh "Duffy" Daugherty has become one of the most popular coaches in the nation in college football history during his 19 years as a mentor from the Spartans. Daugherty was famous for his wit, personality and wisdom.

He became a great service to the sports journalists to find quotes like: "Soccer is a contact sport is a collision sport. Overall results of 19 years Daugherty was 109-65-5 (63% win-loss percentage).

He was named National Coach of the Year in both 1955 and 1965 and was inducted into the Hall Of Fame Football American college in 1984.

After 26 years the term of Biggie Munn and Duffy Daugherty, with four national championships, the football program at Michigan State nearly went into the trash.

It is true that after George Perles Daugherty in 1987 lead the Spartans to their first Rose Bowl appearance 9-2-1 in 21 years beating Southern California 20-17 to finish No. 8 in the national wide. Pearl was defensive line coach and defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers Curtain Steel "defense that led to Super Bowl in 1974, 1975, 1978 and 1979.

Despite turning around the MSU football program temporarily, Pearl could not or smell the success Biggie Munn and Duffy Daugherty. Since 1987, nothing has taken the Michigan State back to the national scene that was in Munn and Daugherty.

Michigan fortunes State football are now in the hands of Mark Dantonio, the former defensive coordinator of the national championship team at Ohio State in 2002.
