Victorian England Politics
Period drama equivalent to Western/Samurai film in UK?
Westerns and Samurai films have their own distinctive style of lengthly showdowns and dramatic shots, but is there an equivalent genre like it in the muddy environment of Britain? Like, medieval period dramas? Or ‘Eastern’ films set in Victorian England? What’s the setting in general? (probably medieval times, unless I’m wrong)
Exclude (current) boring TV period dramas mostly about romance and politics in general. I’m talking Kurasawa/Sergio Leone-like stuff here. You could say Shakespeare stuff if you’d like, but can you compare them to the way films like ‘Fistful of Dollars’ are shown? That’s what I’m looking for.

I’m aware Kurasawa’s films were the basis for a few spaghetti westerns. I’m just wondering if there’s any film with the same kind of cinematography and action scenes that’s used in a historic English setting.
Many Western films, especially Sergio Leone films were originally Kurosawa films, shot in the same style, with the same characters, dialogue, very similar sets, etc. The original Kurosawa film that “Fistful of Dollars” is based on is called “Yojimbo” which translates as bodyguard. Watch this film and you will immediately see the comparison.
Clint Eastwood and Sergio Leone were totally inspired by the Kurosawa movies and simply translated the format to a Western setting. Watch “The Seven Samurai” , the inspiration for “The Magnificent Seven”.
So unless any British directors and filmmakers were similarly inspired, I doubt you’ll find an equivalent. However there were quite a few British movies with similar themes to what you are looking for, that were made in the 60′s and 70′s by company’s like Hammer Films. Seek out the “Fu-Manchu” movies for a starting point.
PS: No films which exactly fulfil your criteria, that I know of, but it sounds like an interesting concept, especially in a Victorian adventure type setting as you suggest. Sorry that I can’t be more help.
